As summer is right around the corner, many people are planning their travel for vacation. While travel is fun, its cost could break your bank if not planned well. I have tried many ways to travel on a budget. Here are my top tips to save money on travel:
1. Use checklists for packing and other necessities.
We make shopping lists for groceries; similarly, we need checklists for travel. We cannot expect we can always remember all the necessities that should be packed in and all the essential things that we need to complete before leaving for a vacation. Download three free checklists I’ve created and used for years.

2. Consider Airbnb for affordable accommodations.
Airbnb is an online service helping people book spared rooms of local hosts. You can rent an entire house or a single room. Using Airbnb is usually cheaper than living in a hotel. You may even have access to a kitchen to cook for yourself to avoid the high cost of eating out.
Right now, for first-time users, Airbnb gives you $40 off a home booking of $75 or more and $15 toward an experience of $50 or more. The coupon code is valid for one year from date of sign up. Sign up for Airbnb for free before this deal is gone!
3. Use Rakuten (previously Ebates) for booking airline/hotel/car rental to get cash back.
Many people just know Rakuten (previously Ebates) is a cashback app for online shopping, but one can get cash back for booking tickets, car rental, and hotels too. Travel booking websites, such as Expedia, Hotwire, Justfly, etc. offer various percents of cash back with Rakuten.

4. Earn airline mileages to fly for free.
Many airlines offer generous signup bonus when you apply for their credit card. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card promises 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points when you sign up and spend $4,000 in the first three months.
It’s the best credit card for mileage, in my opinion. I’ve been using it for nearly 10 years and redeemed many free tickets for national and international trips.
5. Save money on dining
Dining out on travel seems unavoidable and it could easily drain your wallet. There are many ways you can save money on dining out.
Pack more snacks with you and some of the snacks could be quite filling. When you do need to eat at restaurant, eat lunch (usually cheaper than dinner) as your biggest meal of the day. Many restaurants offer daily special for their lunch and usually lunch menu is usually cheaper than dinner menu.
