As a family of four, we love traveling together. But flights for four people could cost us quite a fortune. I was extremely happy when I found there is a way for my kids to fly free with me. Yes, it is possible. Southwest Companion Pass allows me to choose one person to fly free (I still pay the September 11th security fee) with me every time I purchase or redeem points for a Southwest flight. I will share with you on how to get your next free flight.
To get a Companion Pass, you need to fly 100 qualifying one-way flights with Southwest or earn 110,000 qualifying Rapid Rewards (RR) points in a calendar year. Then you will receive a Companion Pass for the following full calendar year, plus the remainder of the year in which you earned it. You can use the companion pass on not just your kids but also any your friends or family members. It is one of best mileage programs I’ve ever participated.
Flying 100 one-way flights in a year seems to a mission impossible to most people. However, earning 110,000 RR points is much doable for people to receive their Companion Pass. While you can earn points by flying with Southwest and making purchases at Southwest partners in hotels, dining, rental cars, and retail, it seems a long way to go from zero to 110,000 points in a year.
Well, you don’t need either travel a lot or break your bank by spending lots of money. The fastest way to get to Companion Pass is through signup bonus points for RR credit cards. Right now Southwest offers three different Rapid Reward Credit Cards–Plus Card, Premier Card, Premier Business Card.
Plus Card: This is the card that I am holding now. It is a great visa credit card, offering 40,000 bonus points after $1,000 purchases in the first 3 months; $69 annual fee; 3,000 Anniversary points. The annual fee is the lowest compared to other Rapid Reward Credit cards. More on Rapid Reward Plus Credit Card.
Business Premier Card: 60,000 bonus points after $3,000 purchases in the first 3 months, $99 annual fee, 6,000 Anniversary points More on Rapid Reward Business Premier Credit Card.
Can you apply for more than one card? Yes, you can. As all RR credit cards are issued by Chase Bank, you need to remember Chase has so-called 5/24 rule that you can only have five approved cards from Chase in the last 24 months. Otherwise, your application will be declined.
You can apply both Premier Card and Plus Card and receive 80,000 points after spending $1,000 on each card in the first 3 months. If you add 6,000 anniversary points for the Premier Card and 3,000 anniversary points for the Plus Card in addition to 1,000 points each obtained from spending $1,000 in the first 3 months, you will only need 19,000 more points to the path of Companion Pass.
If you have a business, apply for both Premier Card and Premier Business Card. The signup bonus points are 100,000 in total, plus the 6,000-anniversary points. With that many points, you are guaranteed to have a Companion Pass when you get both signup points and anniversary points.
